Vacuum weekly with suction only — no beater bar, which abrades wool pile and eats fringes. Rotate the rug 180 degrees every six months so wear and sunlight age it evenly. For spills: blot immediately with a white cloth, outside-in, cool water only, and stop there. Wool felts permanently when scrubbed, and vegetable dyes can migrate the moment the wrong chemistry touches them.
Three killers, in order. First, grit: a rug can hold several times its weight in dry soil down in the foundation, sanding the knots with every footstep while the surface still looks fine.
